Who are the Darn Yarn folks anyways?

Who are the people behind Darn Yarn? Why do we look so cartoonish on the site? What sets us apart? How did this whole adventure start? Gather round, grab your work in progress and a beverage, and read on!
My name’s Allen and I’m a relatively new knitter, all things considered. OK, that’s an understatement—I haven’t even finished a scarf yet (but I’m working on it!). I’m a website developer and a customer service representative by trade, so you’ll generally see me on the “website and email” end of things here at Darn Yarn. My wife, Kelly, is the “Knitter in Chief” of our operation. She’s been knitting avidly for years and has always had a passion for hunting down new and unique yarns, both from local yarn stores and from indie and small-batch dyers across North America.
The problem she ran into was that so many small-batch and indie dyers were hard to find without ordering from each one individually. Sometimes she would luck into a LYS that had a couple of them—but that would often mean a drive across the city (or across the province) to look. When the pandemic hit, those drives were suddenly much riskier, if not impossible. Mail orders were safer, obviously, but they involved multiple shipping charges, sometimes duty on international orders, and also they would take for freaking ever to arrive, and no one likes waiting, including us.
We saw a problem and set out to solve it with Darn Yarn, collecting an ever-expanding list of indie and small-batch dyers in our store. Our mission is to provide an easy-to-navigate website where you can find what you’re looking for (and discover treasures you didn’t know you needed), while offering a fair, flat-rate shipping option with free shipping available on larger orders.
Are we where we want to be yet? No, not yet— but we’re working on it. Thanks to the support of our customers, we’ve been able to expand faster than we expected— and we’re still growing. We’re finding new dyers, building new relationships, and hopefully arriving at your door very soon.

P.S. I realize that I didn’t get into the “why do we look so cartoonish on the site?” part of the story. Well, you see, it’s because those drawings are adorable. Just like we are IRL.
