You may have seen their yarns on our site already, but we wanted to give a very warm welcome to Forbidden Fiber Co – one of our many enormously talented dye studios.
Forbidden Fiber Co is a supplier based out of Brighton, TN, USA. They specialize in yarn that tells a story through colour, be it a series inspired by books, movies, or television (such as their Harry Potter, Avengers Infinity War, and Downton Abbey collections), an original concept (their Sheeppunk collection, which we can’t wait to see more of), or simply the stunning colours in a photograph or work of art.
A lifetime of fibre arts experience behind every skein of yarn
FFC’s proprietress, Leann Ross, is a third-generation fiber artist who learned to knit as a child. She spent long hours in her mother’s craft store, and even more hours raiding the store’s stock in their garage. Knitting was always her favourite crafting activity.
In time, Leann learned to design and spin her own yarn, selecting colours and materials that were best for whichever project she had in mind. She dug deeper into the topic and started learning about everything from the different kinds of wool to refining processes to how to create her own blends. Leann’s first yarn was made of Romney wool and dyed in the Ravenclaw colours, silver and blue (shout-out to my Hogwarts housemate!). And from there, she set out to tell even more stories with her yarn.
Forbidden Fiber Co : from kitchen table to dye studio
In ten years, Forbidden Fiber Co has grown from Leann’s kitchen table to a 5-woman operation in a 3000-square-foot studio. They carry a variety of yarn weights and materials, including superwash merino and merino/nylon blend, both available from us here at Darn Yarn. Leann’s current favourite product is FFC’s Goliath yarn, a super-soft bulky weight yarn that works up like a dream.
What’s next for FFC? They’ll be continuing creating more themed boxes through 2021 (stay tuned for more information – these are fun!) and after that? We hear that world domination isn’t off the table!
